What Happens in a Moment

Written by Dave Leake

As the high school youth pastor at Allison Park Church, late June, for me, is one of the most exciting and stressful times of the year! Hundreds of hours of preparation go into making a short, five-day window called Impact something really special. It’s a season for me that rides polar opposites of electrifying highs down to exhausting lows and back. All kinds of volunteer meetings, project plans, budget revisions, and creative brainstorming are mixed together in hopes of creating a super fun, memorable and safe (praise the Lord!) week for students!

But what never ceases to amaze me is that no amount of preparation or hard work can equal what God can do in a matter of seconds. It takes the youth teams hundreds of hours to make a difference in a week, but God only needs a moment to change a lifetime.

What happens in a moment when God takes control? Let me share a few stories with you to illustrate. Here are just a couple of the things that God did on Thursday night during the evening service at Impact.

Lauren is a junior in high school and has been attending APC for a number of years. During the moments following service Lauren asked her friends to pray for her back as she suffered from scoliosis, a condition that adversely impacts the curvature of her spine and causes a lot of pain. Her friends laid their hands on Lauren and asked Jesus to do a miracle. Just a few moments after they finished praying Lauren tested out her back to find that her spine was completely healed! Not only was she without pain but she was able to fully bend backwards and forwards!

Heidi plays on the 7th grade football team at her school. She was the first girl to ever try out and make the team! Last August, she badly injured her knee and was told she would probably never play sports again because of the danger it would pose to re-injuring herself. In addition to this, she had to live with a lot of pain when she would put any physical exertion into the knee. Well, in the same moment that Lauren’s friends prayed for her Heidi’s friends did as well. And, you guessed it, God totally restored her knee back to 100% health! Heidi is now able to run and jump on her knee without any pain!

As their youth pastor, the best part to me was that I had absolutely nothing to do with any of the healings! The students prayed and God moved! There are many more stories of healings, miracles and students giving their lives to Jesus that I could share, but the point is that all you need to give God is a single moment. I’m not sure what you’re going through personally, but I want to encourage you to continue to seek God. All He needs is a moment to change an entire lifetime!
