Once the teams are drafted coaches will contact you around the first week in December with your team assignment.

Drafting Policy

– Special Requests to have a child play basketball with a friend or a specific coach will not able to be taken into consideration with the exception of a head coach coaching his/her child. Our drafting process is designed to draft teams as evenly as possible using a computer drafting program. Special requests are not able to be factored into our drafting system.  In regards to cheerleading, any special requests that are given will be taken into consideration as long as the girls are in the same grade.

– Basketball Skill Evaluations are done before the draft. Each player completes six skill evaluations and receives an evaluation score. These scores are entered into a computer drafting system and the teams are divided as evenly as possible based on those scores.

– Carpool Links are factored into the drafting process as long as both children request to carpool with each other. Each child can only indicate one carpool link on his/her form and the carpool link will only be considered if BOTH children indicate it on their form. Even though this is considered in the drafting process we do NOT guarantee that we will be able to accommodate carpool links. Our highest priority is drafting the teams as evenly as possible.

– Practice Night Exclusions can be requested on the registration form. We are only able to process ONE practice night exclusion. If more than one practice night exclusion is indicated on the form, we will pick one of the nights for you.  These requests are taken into consideration, but we do NOT guarantee that we can honor every practice night exclusion.

– After the draft there is the possibility that we can make some roster changes if a child is drafted to a practice on a night that they are not able to attend or if they did not have their carpool link honored. If you would like to request a change you can do so by contacting us at 412-879-0587 within one week.  We will try to accommodate those requests, but we do not guarantee that we will be able to.  If you have questions or concerns, once your child has been drafted to a team, you may contact Kyra Jacobs @ 412-879-0587.  At this point we will offer a 75% refund if a player needs to withdrawal from the league as long as it is done before the uniforms are distributed.

      – Evaluation/Registration Volunteer

      – Snack Bar Volunteer

Our league is designed to create a safe environment for children and to create a positive playing experience where all of our coaches are able to lead children in a short Bible based devotions during practices.

Practices:

Our first week of practice for Basketball-Elementary & ALL Cheer will begin the week of December 11th, 2016.

First game/scrimmage for all Basketball-PreK will begin on Sunday January 8th, 2017

Once the teams are drafted coaches will contact you around the first week in December with your team assignment.

BASKETBALL-ELEMENTARY / ALL CHEER PRACTICES: During each practice coaches will take a few minutes to teach a brief lesson to the kids and they will have a scripture memory verse each week. The kids who memorize that verse for the following week’s practice will receive a green star award to put on their jersey or megaphone.

Your team/squad will practice on the same day and at the same time each week.  Each team will be assigned a one-hour practice each week.

Our practices run from 3:00 pm-9:00 pm on Sunday and from 4:00 pm-9:00 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

BASKETBALL-PREK PRACTICE / SCRIMMAGE: Our Basketball-PreK league will function a little different compared to the Elementary leagues.  Basketball-PreK will also have a one-hour time slot on SUNDAYS ONLY. (There will be no mid-week practice for the Basketball-Prek league.)  This Sunday practice/scrimmage will be divided up into 2 sessions.  The first 30 minutes will be for individual team practice where the coach will teach the foundational aspects of basketball.  The last 30 minutes will be a scrimmage with another PreK team in order to develop the team aspect of basketball.

Game Day:

Game days are the highlight of any sport experience. In Upward Sports we try to enhance this experience by making it as fun and encouraging as possible. Each of our game days include:

– Player Introductions – Each player is announced by name as they run onto the court before the game. In some of our leagues our cheerleaders will participate by creating a pompom tunnel for the players to run through.

– Halftime Presentation – During each halftime we have an entertaining video presentation to help teach our character trait of the week. In some of our leagues we will also have a halftime cheer led by one of our cheerleading squads.

– Post-Game Star Awards – Following each game coaches will give each player and cheerleader a star award for their contrbution during the game. The stars can be displayed on the basketball players t-shirts and on the cheerleaders megaphones. Each star highlights a specific area in which a player excelled. The stars represent the following:

BLUE – Best Effort for both basketball and cheerleading

YELLOW – Sportsmanship for basketball and Spirit for cheerleading

GRAY – Offense for basketaball and Leadership for cheerleading

RED – Defense for basketball and Cheers for cheerleading

WHITE – Christlikeness for both basketball and cheerleading

All of our games will take place on Saturday between 8:00am-4:00pm.

Your coaches will be able to provide a complete game schedule by the end of December.

Each child will play at least half of each game and no player will sit out more than 1 period at a time. Each of our coaches are trained to use a substitution system that allows every player to receive equal playing time.

Using the evaluation scores and coaches rankings each child will be assigned to play man-man defense on a player with similar ability.
